Tower Hamlets Town Hall

Richard Griffiths Architects acted as conservation architects along side AHMM to redevelop the Grade II listed building of the former Royal London Hospital on Whitechapel Road as a new Civic Centre for the Tower Hamlets Council.

The proposed works included the reuse of the front building designed by Boulton Mainwaring in the 1750s redevelopment behind the retained façade of the Grocer’s wing, the extension designed by Charles Barry Junior in the 1870s.

A new Z-shaped extension at the back now accommodates open plan staff offices and the council chamber and directly links to the south facing garden, as part of a wider public realm scheme.

RGA was involved in the project in regard to the heritage repair, conservation, restoration of the listed building and the overall design strategy. Part of our services included the assessment of the significance and the issues facing the historic building, and the preparation of a conservation management plan.
